Beatlemania

Acrylic, 20"x20"

inspiration

This piece was created specifically for the Beatles Art Contest hosted by Fab Fest, a Beatles-inspired two-day festival here in Charlotte.

I was inspired by the Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. Since this was their first US television performance, it is a significant moment in their career as well as in pop culture as a whole. I wanted to depict a young girl in the 60s watching the performance, as well as foreshadow their Blue and Red complication albums that came out after the band had broken up. I wanted to transport the viewer back in time as well as show them the cultural significance the band had and still has on music today.

The Beatles hold a special place in my heart. It was my first love when it came to music; I grew up listening to them. My mom would pick me up from elementary school and had the CD for the Blue album on repeat every day. I could sing all the words by the time I was 10. I loved drawing ever since I was a kid, and I even drew a picture of an Octopus’s Garden.

Once I heard this festival was having an art contest, I knew I had to participate. I ended up winning 3rd place for the Amateur category in the art show, which I am very proud of!

"Oh we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long I fell in love with her
Now I'll never dance with another
Oh when I saw her standing there "

- I Saw Her Standing There by The Beatles
