Forget Me Not

Acrylic, 10"x20"

inspiration

We all have that one person we cannot forget about. Whether it was a short flame or a long term relationship, everyone has that one person that they wish they could forget but simply cannot. Another side of that is wishing that the other person doesn't forget about you. As we go through life, we interact with many people and have experiences with them, some short and some long. Longing for someone is an agonizing feeling that we've all experienced before. I've gone through it, I've watched my friends go through it. Wishing things were different, wishing the other person doesn't forget about you, even if things have ended, etc. There's a lot of feelings that come with trying to forget about someone or not wanting them to forget you.

We all talk about the idea of moving on, forgetting about the other person, distracting ourselves with other things, other people. But we never highlight the idea of wanting them to never forget about us. Hoping they don't forget, hoping they'll remember every line on your face or how you take your coffee or how your hair looks like a mess when you wake up in the morning. To remember someone is to remember how they were.

I had heard about this specific flower a while ago but never really dug into the reason why these flowers were called "forget-me-nots". After learning about it, I fell in love with them even more.

Below is the origin story of the name of the flower:

There are many old legends about where the meaning and name of the Forget Me Not flowers came from, all stemming from Europe. One of the most well-known legends describes a German knight who was strolling with his lady along the banks of a river.

The lady notices beautiful blue flowers which were about to be pulled out and into the stream of the river. She wanted to save the flowers so the knight jumped into the water and tossed the flowers onto the bank.

He could not fight the current and so was carried out to sea. As he was being swept away he called out “forget me not” in German.

His lady names the flowers Forget Me Not and wore them every day until she dies in honour of her knight.

There is another Greek legend that tells us that when the gods were distributing colors to the flowers, one small flower was heard to whisper ‘forget me not…’There was only blue remaining, and so this delicate flower was born
